Cuban tres master and latin music veteran Papa Orbe will release his very first album under his own name in 2022. Taken from this forthcoming LP, his first single called “Jutía Con Yuca” is a son cubano style song about Papa Orbe’s childhood memories in Santiago de Cuba.
He used to go to his grandparents farm and gather with his whole family and friends for what they call “guateques”. These parties could start on a Friday afternoon and end on Sunday morning. And while the music was omnipresent, it was necessary to cook for at least forty people. So when we ask him why he composed a song that tells a family story: “I suppose it’s because the brain seeks the most pleasant memories of the past to cope with a 30 year exile from my homeland” he says.
There's something to the production here I can't describe. It isn't totally smooth, but it's jazzy in an unpredictable way. Similarly, the lyrics are more arrogance swagger than I normally care for, but it has this staggered flow that I find really interesting. Gaelan D'costa
