Two sides of New-York rare Soul & Funk on a limited licensed reissue 45.
The band originally was a house band for J&S Records owned by Zelma Sanders. Zelma, a black and female record producer, was known to call at the last minute to gather her band for a recording session. Rumor has it, the band had extra studio time and put down their tracks in only a couple of takes. Most were self taught musicians.

I'd recommend getting the full set of singles by Mohawkestra. Every track is killer. Paint it black breathes new life into what we all know is one of the Stone's best. Outrageously funky playing, and super, super in the pocket.
I was curious about the name of group. Wondered whether it was from a shared love of Alan Hawkshaw and Sun Ra? Jesse Brown
