about

This latest Rocafort EP is an exciting, international jazz affair stretching across time and continents. Consisting of musicians from Mexico, Serbia, Catalonia and Turkey, the Gökhan Sürer Quartet delivers a new perspective on the oriental jazz genre.

Gökhan Sürer is a young Turkish pianist, composer and arranger whose musical education reaches from Istanbul, to NYC and currently Barcelona. His website describes his style as “World, Fusion, Jazz” which is probably why the spirit of Chick Corea is strongly felt alive and kicking in all of the compositions.

CHIMERA is like the soundtrack to a modern mythological journey across all sides of the Mediterranean and beyond. Anatolian magic is woven throughout the four titles, most of them filled with an elegant urgency and tension in the rhythmic composition with the intension of giving a modern jazz twist to Turkish and Armenian melodies along with elements of rock, funk and reggae.

These four tracks have been taken from the first studio album of the project recorded at the Room Studios in Barcelona. This is possibly Rocafort’s most ‘mature’ release to date, in the sense that, as with most jazz, it requires intense listening in order to get the most out of the musical journey and detail in the composition. It’s not a three-minute listen, but rather a sumptuous aural adventure complete with chirping crickets and Byzantian mystery.

"Rocafort Records has excelled itself once again with this release, a four-track journey into "oriental jazz" by a quartet of international musicians" - Juno Records

"this one gets a HUGE recommendation from us!"
- Sounds Of The Universe (London)

"Love Onbeşli !"
- Gilles Peterson

"with flowing solos on Rhodes and other keyboards, in a way that starts with some of the best laidback fusion of the 70s – spacious, never too jamming, but nicely powerful " - Dusty Groove (Chicago)

"This EP is some of the best jazz you may not have heard of being made today"
- DJ Prestige (fleamarketfunk.com)
